About the Exhibit:

Agriculture: The Cultivation of Montgomery County will open to the public on Thursday, March 1, 2012 at the Carnegie Museum of Montgomery County. This exhibit will cover the history of agriculture in Montgomery County as well as the state of agriculture today. Visitors will learn about the science and business aspects of farming and the supporting networks of farm-related businesses and organizations in the county and the state.

Visitors to the exhibit will learn about:

Basic agriculture systems and terms
Where Montgomery County ranks in the state, and where Indiana ranks in the nation in multiple agricultural products.
The impact of agriculture on Montgomery County
What it is like to be a successful farmer in Montgomery County
The technology involved in successful agriculture and how it has changed over time
Groups and organizations relating to Montgomery County agriculture, such as FFA and 4-H

Judging Criteria

Exhibit Logo must:

· Be able to be viewed in color and in black and white

· Be appropriate for a family friendly audience

· Be scalable from 2 inches to 36 inches

· Represent Montgomery County and/or Agriculture

The winning design will be used to promote the exhibit online and in print to a local, regional and national audience. The exhibit will run through the end of 2012.

Please submit logo in PDF Form to Carnegie@cdpl.lib.in.us by Friday, January 30, 2012. The winner will be notified by February 10, 2012 and will be invited to the Exhibit Preview on February 29^th to be an honored guest at the event which includes the Annual Meeting of the Friends of the Carnegie Museum.

Agriculture in Montgomery County!

Opening to the public on Thursday, March 1, 2012 at the Carnegie Museum of Montgomery County, this exhibit will cover the history of Agriculture in Montgomery County as well as the state of Agriculture today.

To create this exhibit we need your help. If you have photographs of the Montgomery County Fair or photographs of local people at the Indiana State Fair, the museum would be interested in borrowing them for the exhibit. Also, old farm tools, maps, Almanacs, FFA Jackets and more are needed to complete the visual picture of Montgomery County Agriculture. Any items from the 1979 Farm Progress Show here in the county would be most welcome. Items can be donated to the museum or loaned to the museum for the duration of the exhibit.

AWOW! event planned for Thursday

The gallery walk — the first of its kind in Crawfordsville — will take place

5-7 p.m. today, Thursday, October 20th.

“We all really wanted to partner and give people a chance to see all the galleries,” said Kim VanArsdell, director of Athens Arts. “It will be a nice evening.”

VanArsdell believes the arts are alive and well in Crawfordsville.

“I think in any community, a good measure of the quality of life in that community is how much attention is paid to the arts,” she said. “We are fortunate in Montgomery County to have a wealth of talent, and it is so important to expose people to that talent. For children, it can show them so many ways to be creative. We have actual artists working in our studio, so it’s not just a place to acquire art, it’s also a teaching environment.”

AWOW! will be the debut of the pieces the Carnegie Museum will receive from the Hoosier Salon, a non-profit organization founded in 1925. The Hoosier Salon sponsors an annual exhibit of Indiana art, which since 1990 has been shown at the Indiana State Museum. In late October, the exhibit is split and pieces are sent to various locations throughout the Hoosier State.

“We will have 20 paintings, primarily the works of West Central Indiana artists,” said Carnegie Museum curator Kat Burkhart. “This is very high-quality art, and having it here is very original to (the Hoosier Salon’s) purpose, which is getting art out all over the state.”

The Hoosier Salon pieces will remain on display at Carnegie through Dec. 16.

“It fits nicely into our space; it’s fun and it’s free,” Burkhart said. “I’m excited to see what we get ... it should be some really cool art.”

Burkhart was grateful for the opportunity to team up with the other art venues for AWOW!

“It’s fun to be collaborative,” she said.

Diane Hamill, curator of the Mary Bishop Gallery, agreed.

“I think it’s exciting,” she said. “It’s wonderful that we can show people how much culture is available in such a short distance. We all have something different ... everybody has something to teach somebody.”

Hoosier Salon at CMMC

Selections from the 2011 Hoosier Salon will be at the Carnegie Museum between October 21st and December 16th.

The Hoosier Salon legacy began in 1925 when the Daughters of Indiana opened the doors to the first exhibition at Marshall Fields and Company Galleries in Chicago. The high quality of art was applauded by critics and the public alike, the first exhibition included works by such notables as T.C. Steele, J. Ottis Adams and Will Vawter, and was an unqualified success.
In 1940 the annual exhibit moved from Chicago to downtown Indianapolis. The Annual Exhibition is shown annually at the Indiana State Museum. The Hoosier Salon galleries in Broad Ripple, New Harmony and Wabash, also host over thirty special shows each year. http://www.hoosiersalon.org/

It is not everyday that you get to see a real brain up close!

Brain teasing puzzles also were on display for Brain Day.
Mazes, shape puzzles and drawing activities added to the fun.

The Lie Detector test was very popular and always had a line.
It was also fun to have a crowd watch each person through the test.
The readings were projected for all to see!

Prism goggles change your visual perception and demonstrate how the brain can adapt.
The brain adapts quickly, but not immediately, some things take practice!

What is the difference between a Non-taster, Taster & a Supertaster? I think this visitor just found out he is a Taster!

This family friendly event showcased the brain in different ways, but you might get the impression that this young visitor would rather be at the coloring table than watching her dad handle a real brain.

The Currency exchange kept visitors busy while they tried to balance out different
currency from around the world.

Money Day was a great success!
Thank you Dr. Joyce Burnette for all your hard work getting this day ready and to the Wabash students who spent a summery Saturday afternoon helping visitors learn about money.

Thanks to all the visitors who came to see the currency from around the world, participate in an "Inflation Auction" and learn about money, currency exchange, interest and economics in general. And the Penny Photo op was a big hit! Join us next year for Money Day 2.

Many people commented on how much they learned about the history of money and the games about who was on each coin and dollar bill helped them realize they had never seen some of the US Currency bills. Thank you Tri-County Bank for allowing us to borrow one of those rarely seen bills!

MONTGOMERY COUNTY SPORTS: "The Last County Championship" book signings this week

The Linden High School basketball team won the final Montgomery County Basketball Championship 40 years ago in 1971. The final championship might be one that many remember, but now there is a book to commemorate the team.

The Last County Championship, written by Linden coaches Thomas Speaker and DL White, is the story of the Linden Bulldogs winning the 1971Montgomery County Championship.

Speaker was the head coach of that team and White was an assistant.

Speaker has written several books, including one on the 2008 West Lafayette State Championship football team. The two thought that since it was the 40-year anniversary that the book would be nice for the memories, White said.

The book is also dedicated to the parents of all the seniors on the 1971 squad and will feature some memories from former players as well.

The radio broadcast play-by-play is also utilized in the book.

"It's nice for Linden fans," White said. "And basketball fans would probably like it too."

White said that his and Speaker's book has a more specific appeal than many of the other basketball books that have been written on Montgomery County over the years.

Copies of the book can be purchased at the Carnegie Museum or one of the two upcoming book signings.

The first book signing will be held at the Linden Library on Thursday, from 6-8 p.m. The second signing will be at the Crawfordsville Public Library from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Saturday.

The public is encouraged to attend either of the signings to discuss the last county tournament and any basketball memories they might have from it.

The work in progress seen here is a permanent mural based on architectural details from throughout Montgomery County. Each individual image begins as a photograph that is cropped, simplified, and recolored. The images are then arranged to create a large abstract composition.
The concept for this project grew from my own experiences walking and driving around Crawfordsville and other communities in the county. I think that architecture is a living record of history available to all who pass by. My hope is that this work would encourage viewers to appreciate the historical treasures that our area has to offer and to help preserve them for future generations.

Mrs. Hudson's Tuttle Middle School students did it again!
They created another outstanding exhibit for the Carnegie Museum of Montgomery County.
This time it was all about Brick.
Montgomery County has a facinating history of brick making and the students did a wonderful job of sharing that history.

They decorated the walls to look like brick walls.
Then attached their brick info onto the 'brick' walls.

Included was a Lego brick building area.

The Carnegie Museum Participates in the Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day each year.

During the SMMD participating museums offer free admission.

As CMMC is always free, we had to find another way to celebrate Museum Day.

So, we created a game. Participants look for information in our exhibits which explains how CMMC is just like the Smithsonian only smaller. And of course we have a little prize for anyone that finds them all.

Brain Day was a success!

Turnout for Brain Day was excellent on the beautiful Saturday, with well over 100 visitors just for the afternoon.

During Brain Day, Dr. Karen Gunther demonstrated how the brain could be tricked. If a person concentrates on the fake hand long enough they will begin to believe it is their own. This young visitor to Brain Day certainly seems to be concentrating hard.

Summer at the Carnegie Museum II

Six more people finished the summer program! The last part of the program is to write what you liked or didn't like about the program. So far there have not been any dislikes.

Here are some of the children's answers:

Noah wrote, "It was fun and it was educational and I will do it again (next year)."

Angel liked the Sugar Creek Exhibit "best of all."

Amelia wrote, "I think the Carnegie is the best museum ever! You guys put on awesome exhibits like the Prom and Peanuts. I love the Sugar Creek Exhibit. I think you take awesome topics and put together your thoughts and boom! it's done."

Steve liked the Snoopy Exhibit best but also liked learning about new things.

And 12-year-old Thomas learned "some random facts about words, Peanuts, C-ville and all kinds of history stuff that was really weird."

With praise like this you will not want to miss out!
There is still time to join in the fun but Snoopy leaves us the end of July and Summer at the Carnegie Museum ends Aug 6th.

Summer at the (Carnegie) Museum II

So far we have 85 children (ages 3-15) signed up for Summer at the Museum II!
They visit the museum on their own schedule, complete the activities (independently or with an adult) and earn prizes.

Activities include an alphabet hunt through out the museum, a crossword puzzle, playing games, quick drawings, and graphing prom dress colors. All answers can be found in the museum and we (the staff) are available to give hints and/or explanations.

Amelia has been at the museum nearly everyday since the June 1st start date and has finished Summer at the Museum II!

There are extra activities for those children, like Amelia, who finish the program and want more museum related challenges (and prizes).

The program runs through August 6th and children can sign up any time CMMC is open.

Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the whole gang's here! They have traveled from the Charles M. Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa, CA to share their story with Montgomery County residents.

Why an exhibit on Charles Schulz and the Peanuts here at a museum dedicated to Montgomery County? No, Charles Schulz was not from Montgomery County but
1. He and his characters touched the lives of generations of people here in Montgomery County (and millions of others around the world).
2. His Peanuts characters are timeless and remain relevant and popular today
3. Charles Schulz painted Snoopy on Joe Allen's helmet,
4. We have our very own nationally syndicated cartoonist from Montgomery County.

Don't know Joe Allen or why he had a helmet, don't know our cartoonist? On the way up to see the Peanuts exhibit visit CMMC's WOW gallery to become acquainted with their stories.

Congratulations to Hannah Keedy and Brian Smith for winning the Carnegie Museum's Invention Convention. Both presented compelling inventions that solve the ever growing energy problem in unique ways. Hannah presented an invention that had to do with hydroelectricity, and Brian presented an invention that focused on man-powered energy. Once again our congratulations go out to these two aspiring inventors. If you would like to see their inventions just stop by the museum when we re-open March 2, 2010. Well, this is a rather unexpected blog. Yesterday, we had our first person complete Summer at the ^Carnegie Museum. Amelia, 8, brought her mom to the museum every day, and had this to say about the program:

"I liked to listen to my heart beat. It was neat. I liked the Before TV gallery. I didn't like carrying the 5 pounds of fat. It was heavy. I liked the switchboard. It was awesome!"

In addition to completing the Summer at the ^Carnegie Museum, Amelia also completed the summer reading program at the library. Amazing! So, to Amelia, we say congratulations!

Little Artists, Big Artist

This morning, the Carnegie Museum had the pleasure of hosting two beginning artists and one professional artist. While Kent Rushing, the winning designer of the new mural, busily worked away, our two younger artists tried their hand at sketching near the medical exhibit. Who knows--perhaps these two aspiring artists will join Kent in the Carnegie Museum one day! Only time will tell!

Summer at the ^Carnegie Museum

This week the Carnegie Museum kicked off its summer program, entitled Summer at the ^Carnegie Museum. Based off the popular Ben Stiller movie, this fun filled program is for preschoolers to eighth graders and has enough discovery and small prizes for everyone! (Participants only need six visits and a smile.)

Not have enough time in your schedule? Don't worry: The program lasts clear until August first. Play with a microscope, a stethoscope, and an old telephone switchboard! See an old printing press, a horse and buggy, and listen to local doctors in our medical exhibit as they describe the funs of the medical profession. With local history for the adults and fun science exhibits for the kids, at the Carnegie Museum, there's a little something for everyone!

Historic Marker Dedication

On the first of May, the Carnegie Museum of Montgomery County had the honor of adding a little history of it's own. While the sky was rainy, the mood was cheerful for the unveiling of the historic marker, celebrating the one hundred and seven year old building as the first Carnegie Library to open in Indiana. Mostly today I was the cutter. I cut things out for just about everyone. It is more tiring than it looks. I got to use the spray glue a few times. It was really sticky. I also helped arrange some of the photos and information on the big red pieces of cardboard. I had a great time.

The best thing I have done today was I spray glued. I didn't get as sticky as I thought I would get, but I did spray glue my fingers together. After I got done with that I started cutting holes, into posters and hanging them up with fishing line, it was fun to do that.
I didn't work on the medicine exhibit, but I worked on the elements poster. I did fluorine, which is in fluoride and toothpaste. So, so far I have a great time and I can't wait to do it again.

When I started setting up exhibits at the Carnegie Museum the first thing I did was vacuum an area so an exhibit could be set up there. Then, I cut papers with a cutting board, so they could be placed onto an exhibit. Next, I went upstairs and put fishing line through holes in posters that were part of a medical exhibit then hung them up. I also moved stuff around and decorated a table (only with a table cloth). I had a fun time at the Carnegie, and I was glad that I got to miss a half day of school I hope to come back soon!

This has been a day of odd jobs. I fixed typos on papers and glued the project together. I worked with Connor on the Native American Project and it took a whole wall. I've still got spray glue on my fingers as I type this.

It has a ton of cool things to see and do, so you should check it out. And, dude, I'm not just saying that because they told me to, I'm saying that because I want to. So come on down to the Carnegie Museum !

I have like never ever written a blog before, so I'm just going to write and pray that I'm doing it right. When we first got to the Museum it was pouring rain, so Mrs. Hudson dropped us off at the door and we went inside. We entered directly into the Wow Room, and ironically the first word I said was wow. After we were introduced to the Museum and the people in it, we were schooled on how to be a good tour guide.
When that was over, my group headed upstairs to work. We found folders lying in several spots on the floor, our job was to take the contents of the folder and arrange it onto a board so it looked all nice and pretty. That part was pretty fun, we just sat on the floor and cut things out and talked. After we were all done with that, we went downstairs and to the Spray Glue. I was the first one to spray glue and it was fun, I just knew I was going to be sticky all day. The boards have turned out gorgeous and I can't wait to see them all hanging up and done. I can't wait until the opening to see it all done and ready. I can't wait to see everybody there, so hopefully you'll come too!!

Hey, this is Kayla B (a middle school student). I don't know how to blog, but this is a lot better then school! No offense Mrs. Maurer, Mrs. Meek, Mrs. Warren, or Mr. Linn. I've been here since 8ish and working like crazy and my knees hurt and I have like 5 minutes left so I'm trying to hurry. Hank and I have been working on Herbal Medicine thing, even though that's not what I worked on last year. Last year I did Marion Kirtley with Shannon . It was awesome! The spray glue is fuunnn! The Herbal Medicine exhibit is awesome. I made it pretty. There's lots of flowers and information about how they heal people. It's pretty sweet. But I'm out of time. You should come see it! So, it's not my first time working at the Carnegie. Last year, I helped install the Rockin' World of Geology and the Days of Dreadful Disasters that I helped create at school. This year, being an "experienced freshman" Mrs. Hudson came to me to see if I would be willing to take a full day off of school to help the little middle schoolers. I've had a lot of good experiences with the Carnegie exhibit installation and creation. It's a lot of fun, since you get to be the voice of the project. From it, you also learn a lot, not all about your topic, but also about the organization that goes into getting it all set up and put together. And, when opening day comes along, you have to be the expert. I think involving students is a great way to get the community involved in the museum, and it's fun.

My experiences at the museum have been really good. I have installed three exhibits that I have created and now I am on my fourth exhibit that I haven't exactly created. Working here at the Carnegie has been wonderful. All of the workers here are very nice and know what they are talking about. They have put in a lot of time to make this place look great and inform the people that come into the museum. If you want to know something that you don't know about today, come out and see the new exhibits that are in the museum now.

I didn't think this would turn out as well as it is. I thought it'd be pretty hectic, a bunch of kids running around with spray glue. Nothing of the sort. We were as organized as middle school kids could be with little supervision, and I think we did pretty well. Sticky is one word I would use to describe this. Right now my fingers are sticking to the keyboard because I touched too much of the glue. It was fun though. We had to work in groups that were just thrown together, ones we didn't think would work. But it turned out really good. We got along great and it was fun. Seemed shorter than it was.
Oh, warning for future generations: Fear Hudson's driving. And wear the seat belt. She could kill you from behind the wheel. Well, bye!

This is the first time I have ever written a blog. We are making posters and being very messy with spray glue. This is a lot better then sitting in a desk learning Science, or Social Studies. My project I worked on in 7th grade was Pioneer Medicines, and Cures. In my group were Elizabeth and Chloe. Though we didn't get a lot accomplished each day being best friends, we finally finished and it's awesome! It is raining outside today. It's a good day to be inside working on your project and being with your friends. You should come and see all the hard work we have done. My experience being at the Carnegie Museum was Amazing. Setting up was really fun! The people working at the Carnegie are really nice, and they would make your experience so much better!
I got to use spray glue for the first time and it was very interesting. I didn't think that putting a museum together would be so much fun!! I'm positive that if you were to come to the Carnegie you would enjoy it! And you would learn a lot! Trust me it's worth it!!!

This is my first time in the museum. At first I thought it would be an ordinary day of work. But it twisted around for me. The Museum is amazing. I wish I would have came a long time ago. A lot of people worked hard today to show the work and history of Montgomery County and it's people. Just by looking at it Crawfordsville looks as if it was an ordinary town with an ordinary history, but we were wrong. If you really want to know what's happened and what is going on, come see for your self. Trust me you will enjoy the time you spend and will return in the near future.

My name is Jake Z. I had a great time at the Carnegie and it was definitely one of those "fun museum experiences." I got to spray glue for the first time and it was pretty sweet. I also got to see the project that I had done last year for the exhibit all finished and ready. I even got to carry some bedpans around and put them in a display case!! Hopefully they had been washed a couple times. Ehh. One of the coolest things was learning how to make cards that flipped all around and made different things. They were just about amazing. I encourage anyone and everyone to come visit the museum when it is all ready because the exhibits are cool and the people are great. Be sure to look for the Roosevelt Hospital for Colored People exhibit created by yours truly and a couple other kiddos. Peace out yo!!!

At the Carnegie Museum of Montgomery County there are tons of interesting exhibits. There are tons of things for you to do, it is very interactive and a great time for everybody.

I looked at the Civil War surgical kit, it was interesting to see what kind of instruments they used to cut off legs.

I like the Before TV room, which has chess sets set up.
Today I am here spray gluing exhibit boards and moving museum pieces into place.

At Carnegie Museum there are lots of great exhibits such as real diseases and diseases doctors use to use leeches for. They use to use leech to cure headaches and stomachaches and now a days if you lose a limb they put leeches on it and suck the blood and release a chemical that prevents blood clotting.

Today I put together some posters with spray glue and hung up a lot of posters.
I got this neat paper thing that looks like you can only open it like one time but you can open it like four times and it gives you different information about the museum. If you want this neat thing you can come to the Carnegie and get one.

My name is Lyndsy J. (Middle School Student) It has been such a fun experience being able to work at the Carnegie Museum with my classmates.
Today I have laid out display boards including "Common Plants Used to make Medicine," and also "Madison Township's relation to Quinine." I have sprayed my jeans with spray glue and broke the top of the glue, via my extremely sticky fingers.
Working at the Carnegie Museum today has been awesome. I really encourage everyone to come to the Carnegie. It's definitely a fun experience.

This is the first time I have ever done a blog entry. Missing school to come set up our projects from last year was very exciting to me! When we first got here we took a tour of the place and we saw a lot of neat things. From Doctors to Medical chairs, you can see everything here at the Carnegie Museum. My project was about pioneer medicine and cures. I had two partners, Spencer and Chloe. We loved doing our project and we learned a lot of interesting facts along the way. This project isn't the easiest, but I can say it was one of the most fun things I have done. In class we did happen to talk a lot being good friends, but in the end we got it done! This rocks. I get to miss all my boring morning classes and put up an exhibit at the Carnegie! Fun, fun, fun. It’s been quite the adventure this first hour.
It started out with us seeing the area we would be working in. After we got a feel for what we would be doing, we talked about what a good museum experience is. We talked about what we should do to make our projects appeal to everyone. At first it seemed like easy work, but I was wrong. We had to cut all the papers, cut and re-cut the plastic, messing up the layouts and start all over again… and again… and again, and then finding a spot on the wall and getting it all hung up. Even though its not as easy as I had expected, it has to be the most fun fieldtrip thingy in the history of ever. If Hudson ever does another thing like this, you can be sure that I’ll be here.

Why the name Collage?

Why did we choose the name Collage?

For many reasons, here is one.

A Collage can be defined in many ways, such as: "A work, such as a literary piece, composed of both borrowed and original material" or "the re-use of material as components within a new complete whole" or "a combination of different things"... there are so many definitions and many of them fit very well into the description of the Carnegie Museum.

We hope to capture some of your thoughts about the Carnegie Museum and its role in the community and to promote discussions about "a combination of different things" that make up who and what we are.
